The story of the R-TOOL and how it came to be; begins with me, the inventor, Dakota Adcock, after enlisting in the Marine Corps at the age of 19. After basic training at MCRD Paris Island, I was sent to the school of infantry (SOI East) for my MOS training as an 0331 Machine Gunner. Upon completion of training and earning my MOS, I received orders to be a part of 3rd Battalion 6thMarine Regiment stationed at Camp Lejeune, NC. For me, it didn’t take long to realize that being part of a war-fighting organization such as the Marines, came with certain responsibilities that were absolutely imperative. One of these responsibilities was to always keep your weapon clean.

After firing thousands of rounds through my issued weapons, I realized there was a huge problem with quickly and efficiently cleaning the weapons I had been given to use and care for. Though my fellow Marines and I were issued cleaning kits, there just wasn’t a good way to get the carbon and debris removed from the weapons. Brushes, scrapers, and solvents did a great job of breaking apart caked on carbon, sand, and dirt, but not a good job of physically removing the debris. We used old skivvy shirts as rags and various cotton swabs to remove the debris, which eventually worked, but the process was painfully slow and inefficient. After talking to my peers and seniors who also had the same problem, I set out to create a purpose-built solution. After more troublesome trips to the armory and the constant reply from the armorer “nope, still dirty” I realized a breakthrough solution. How about a tool that holds a cotton swab? Something small enough to both hold the swab AND fit in the tight places inside the gun that trap the most carbon and debris- like the chamber.

Following this revelation, I invented the R-TOOL out of necessity. My vision was to get the R-TOOL into the hands of Marines, like me, who had a job to do and could appreciate dedicated equipment that helped make the job easier, faster, and more efficient.

After an honorable discharge, it has been 11 years worth of various challenges and set-backs to finally bring the R-TOOL to life. I successfully accomplished 3 careers to be able to afford the ability to bring R-TOOL into production. I dedicated my time, effort, and energy to the design and production of what I can now proudly present as The Original R-TOOL.
